Yeah, I did, she wants to answer, but there's something in his voice--something that almost sounds genuine. It might not be, she thinks, but she wants to believe in it, this possible show of sympathy.

So she does--just for now, she tells herself--and shrugs. And, knowing they're starting to pass more people, all she answers with is, "Okay."
