The walkers have only been around for two years or so, back home, and they've left the human population in the dust. Cetagandans aren't the same kind of mindless frenzy--they sound kind of terrifying in their precision, from what little Daryl's said--but even if they're winning this war, they haven't won. Barrayar has put up a fight.
And that gives Beth hope for them. If she doesn't fight for them, what's the point of being here? Especially now that she's definitely stuck here until she's dead--hopefully a long time from now. There's no point in living here and refusing to make an effort.
