Beth shakes her head, her gaze on the snow. He didn't, but he could have, and someone else tried to, and it's all mixed up in a single thorny mess. Untangling it for Daryl means risking him stomping off to do something stupid, like getting up in search of Byerly. They're both better off leaving it in the past, something to keep in mind without really acknowledging--not to the point that they have to think about what actually happened.

She wishes Maggie were here. If anyone could see it in her face and understand, it'd be her sister.

"He thought I was afraid of him." Because I was. She knows better than to say it, even if she thought she could admit it aloud. "So he dropped the act for a second. That's all."
