Daryl looks up when he hears that faint crack. Honestly, he's impressed. Most city boys and indoor kids balk at snapping necks. This Miles kid has more gumption than he thought.

Well, good for him, and slightly less good for Daryl and Beth's little big secret. He tries not to think about it too much; it'll just make him mad. Moving silently, Daryl refixes the trap with somewhat exaggerated, and overly slow, movements. He makes sure Miles sees what he's doing all the way through.

"'S meant to kill the things," he says, "but these here're young. Too light. Trap just cuts 'em." All traps are based on the idea of using the prey's weight against them. These two simply just didn't have enough weight to hang themselves on their own rope.
