More questions come to Beth, none of which are going to help anyone. What was his name? How much younger was he? What happened to him? She already knows Rani's homeland is gone, at least as she knew it. It'd be cruel to make her relive the loss.

(Besides, talking about brothers only makes her think of Shawn. She's not sure she's talked about him to anybody since that night with the moonshine--his memory stays tight in her heart, when she can manage it.)

With some effort, she pushes all of it away, Maggie and Shawn and Rani's brother and homes that only exist in memories. And she tries to make a face, like eighteen years old means her life is simple. "I can hold my own nose. I'm so tired of eating groats."

Which is, admittedly, a stalling tactic. Eating is one more reminder that you're alive and somebody else isn't.
