vorbratta: (and throw me back in the ditch again)

[BARRAYAR] Sonia Vorbarra (NPC)

Sonia's fully recovered and back on her feet, although preoccupied with Byerly's disappearance -- and then, when she finds out the truth, just a little bit devastated at his confirmed betrayal. (Okay, more than just a little bit.) She's still trying to keep spirits up, not wanting to undo all her own hard work, and she spends as much time as she can helping out in the sick tent. But when she isn't immediately occupied, her usual wandering presence around the camp is strangely absent -- keeping to her own tent when there's nothing else to do.

Although Sonia's often seen with her camera, she's rarely shared any of her work. But today there are black-and-white photographs posted all over, and she's clearly in her social element. As much of an attention-getter as she tends to be, she delights in everyone's work and encourages as many people to participate as she can. So she might be cheerfully asking you about your work, or dragging you off to listen to some old story or music -- because hey, everyone needs a dance partner, right? -- or maybe just showing you her own work, her small sanctuary in this war.

It's easiest to ignore your troubles when you're keeping yourself occupied, so Sonia does just that -- tending to the sick is pretty occupying, after all. She doesn't have any real medical training, but then, neither do most of the people here, and if nothing else she's happy to sit next to you and talk -- or listen -- it's the least she can do. So many did the same for her when she was sick.

c. good news and bad news (closed to york)
Sonia had heard a little bit about York from Wash -- she doesn't know much, just that they were in the same unit, that they're friends. Which is enough for her to want to meet him, really. She's liked all of that crew so far -- even Maine, who wasn't quite as bad as Tucker made him out to be -- so she's feeling pretty positive about liking York, too. So when she hears that York and Wash's other friend Ratchet have escaped from the base and arrived here, the next morning she goes out in immediate search of him.

She doesn't actually know what he looks like, but anyone she doesn't recognize is new, and she's got about a fifty-fifty chance of getting it right. Actually, it's a hundred percent at this point, considering only one of them is sick, from what she's heard. So when she's helping in the sick tent she moves over to someone who's clearly not only new but definitely not Barrayaran and sits beside him with a cup of water and a damp cloth and gives him a sunny smile.

"Hi," she says cheerfully, and with no other preamble: "York, right? Or -- is that the other one? I'm sorry, Wash didn't tell me what you looked like…"

d. misery loves company (and solitude)
Well, at least she knows now for sure that Byerly isn't dead. He's just something much worse: a traitor.

She didn't want to believe at first, but she has no evidence against it. And the more it sinks in, the more it hurts. Byerly was one of her closest friends, her confidante, someone she could trust to treat her like a person first -- someone she could trust at all. And not only had he disappeared without a word, he'd disappeared to go work for the Cetagandans. The thought makes her sick.

It weighs heavily on her, and despite her best efforts to shake it off with just anger, she's too hurt and upset for that to work. So instead she just cries -- her friends, the ones she feels safest around, she goes to them for comfort, but other times she just hides in her tent and cries to herself, although not entirely silently. It's not too hard if you're standing close to her tent.
