If it's possible for Micah's eyes to get any wider, they do, because their enthusiasm is much, much friendlier than the Cetagandans' probing, a desire to understand as well as to know. Micah curls their hands around their coffee cup to keep from reaching out to clasp Lapis's hands -- maybe Gems aren't as friendly to touching as Betan are -- but their smile is incredibly bright. Honestly, despite the obvious age difference, Micah's immediate sense of wonder and awe probably does look a lot like Steven's.
