Sonia stops where she is. Her chest feels like it's caving in.
"Why?" she breathes, because that's all she can get out past the tightness in her throat. "Why do you do that? Why do you be my friend, my confidante, and then -- do that? You can't -- you can't be the kind of friend you were and not matter. You don't get to be the only one to care. You don't get to tell me how I feel. That isn't fair!"
Her voice rises without her meaning it to, and she has to catch her breath with a hiccup. "That's what you took away from me. You took one of the best friends I've had away from me."
