He was physically intimidating but those hazel eyes were gentle as he studied Micah’s expression carefully when they slowly picked out their words. The Spartan was careful not to crowd them or make any sudden gestures because he privately feared Micah might scurry away like a startled animal.

But it wasn’t his first time trying to put a wary or uncertain person at ease. More than one of his Spartans had come to him emotionally and mentally scarred from the horrors of war. They had been abused by the system and often took a little more finesse and patience than their squad mates. There had been a delicate line to be walked with those special cases because some had been too damaged to handle the rigors of training but others had too much potential to be wasted just because of their rough start in life.

“Good, I am glad to hear it. I didn’t think they would harm you but there are less visible ways of abusing power over someone and I can’t abide that sort of thing.” A frown threatened to pull at his expression then but he managed to school it back into something more neutral.

“Kurt Ambrose, sorry I didn’t introduce myself before but things were…too much in flux at the time.” A pensive look briefly skated across the man’s face before he looked away. “I sense you weren’t exactly thrilled to come with us at the time Doctor. And I must confess, my motivations were driven by selfishness because I want nothing more than to return home. But I can’t help but feel as though I played a hand in kidnapping you against your will. Not that the Cetagandans would ever phrase it so uncouthly of course.”
