She's giving her as much as she can. Which isn't much, she knows, but she can't give her real honesty. Not now, at least. She can't admit to how much she hates what happened in Riverfall, how much she hates that she couldn't stop it. Part of her wonders if she could have, if she'd given her cover up for a lost cause, if she'd tried instead of trying to mitigate the damage.

She sighs softly, her lips thinning. "I wasn't fast enough," she murmurs softly and catches herself, tries to cover for it. "I want to get home, but I don't want to see people hurt. I didn't know what was happening until everything went to Hell," she admits. It's half a lie- she's far more concerned with the Barrayar's war than getting home, especially the more she learns about the Cetagandans. Riverfall, kidnapping Sonia? It's just the last straw.

"I just figure it can't hurt to have at least one person that wants to make sure things stay that way," she offers. It's a delicate line, being sympathetic enough that Sonia will at least tolerate her, but not so obviously Barrayaran-leaning that when they inevitably do fast-penta her that Sonia gives up her name as someone working for the other side.
