riverfall
The locals are celebrating the much-welcome coming of spring, and it is a warm one. Pleasant mountain breezes carry the far-off scent of the ocean, and bit by bit, the Barrayaran flora is beginning to bloom. Wildflowers spring up all over, adding a lively splash of color to the camp and village on the backdrop of Barrayar's rust-red native flora.

While the villagers aren't exactly hosting a festival, the entire village is pitching in to sow the spring crops, delayed by the cold freeze. But they lost a quarter of their population to the flu, and they're short on hands. So Barrayarans and outsiders alike come to the village to help, the villagers welcoming them into their homes for the night, as it's a half a day's hike between the camp and the village. While it isn't quite summer yet, the village children are already starting to splash around near the waterfall, inviting others by way of playfully splashing water on them as they pass by.

After the battle, however, the mood in the village turns to ash. With another dozen dead to bury, they've lost almost half their population in the last few months, only 48 of them left, and some of their homes were damaged or destroyed by plasma fire during the fight. Mercifully, their fields were untouched, but the village is littered with bodies, the site of a massacre. Barrayaran soldiers carry off their own dead as well as the Cetagandans, while the villagers burn death offerings beyond the fields.

barrayar
Morale is finally on the rise with the brightening weather, especially with their food stores replenished and the full recovery of the flu in the camp. Their numbers are down, but the Cetagandans' are even worse, and the tactical situation has changed. With half the Cetagandans' force either dead or out of commission, a window of opportunity presents itself. Piotr decides that need to recapture Vorkosigan Vashnoi -- if the city weren't occupied, then Micah's kidnapping by the Cetagandans could have been prevented. The base is an easy target right now with its defenses down -- until reinforcements arrive -- and the reconnaissance they'd done on the base's power generators a few months ago will finally be put to use. They may have a chance at using this to drive the occupying forces out of the city, too.

But they don't have a chance of successfully taking hold of the city without the rest of Piotr's army. About a month before the first outsiders arrived, the location of Piotr's previous camp was discovered by the Cetagandans, and the army split in two to return to fallback locations. The plan was always to rendezvous as soon as possible and reunite the army, and they need to rejoin forces now more than ever. Scouts are sent off into the mountains, looking to make contact with their comrades, and they're in luck -- the other half of Piotr's army, currently led by Major Rifkin, one of his missing general staff.

The last few months haven't been kind to the Barrayarans' supply of weapons and equipment. There's no way they could launch a successful assault on the base with their meager supplies, so Piotr sends several parties to make contact with the underground civilian resistance in Vorkosigan Vashnoi and stock up, then smuggle the weapons out of the city.

They're also low on weapons and equipment, which means Piotr is sending several parties back to Vorkosigan Vashnoi to stock up. Piotr and Ezar have contacts in the city, valuable allies who are part of the underground civilian resistance. They can provide the goods -- but one of the teams will be responsible for making sure the weapons are smuggled safely out of the city with the assistance of other members of the civilian resistance.

With Micah in Cetagandan hands, they are no doubt making progress on the Star Gate Project. Piotr, however, is convinced of Micah's sympathies, and their work could still be to their benefit -- or at least, to the outsiders'. And if nothing else, Micah would be the ideal candidate for sabotage should it come down to it. But for now, Piotr is interested in keeping Micah alive. Micah is a personal friend of Prince Xav's as well as a sympathizer, and their care was entrusted to Piotr, a matter of honor. So for now, his orders to his informants are merely to keep a close eye on Micah and their activities, even befriend them, but not to let slip their true sympathies to Barrayar. And now, with Sonia held captive, Piotr wants more than ever to make new informant contacts on the Cetagandans.

camp
Morale is on the rise, steady and surely. People are feeling good, enjoying the sun and warmth, a relief and a blessing after the weeks of cold and near-starvation. And so the soldiers do what Barrayarans always do when they're in good spirits: they drink. Evenings spent around bonfires playing cards or chest, drinking wine and mead, and they're a lot friendlier to the outsiders these days. Even the new ones have proven themselves with all the aid they gave during the epidemic, so if you're invited over for a drink and a game with the soldiers, don't be too surprised.

Of course, sometimes get taken a little too far, and some soldiers start up some drunken swordfight contests, which probably seemed like a great idea at the time. But you know what they say: it's all fun and games until somebody accidentally gets stabbed in the side. Piotr quickly shuts this down, and anyone involved, outsiders included, is likely to receive punishment, probably in the form of manual labor despite any hangover. The camp is down by over thirty men after last month, but on the (slightly morbid) bright side, at least this means that the outsiders finally get two tents to themselves, which is good considering the warming weather.

After the Princess's capture, however, the mood starts to shift back downhill. They're still not remotely ready to launch their attack on the Cetagandan base, let alone rescue Sonia. Both Piotr and Olivia are in vicious spirits; if you thought Piotr's previous demeanor was dour, he was a ray of frigging sunshine in comparison to now. Now he's furious, frustrated, and he has even less patience for time-wasting bullshit than usual.

missions
Overall, the outsiders' contributions to the spring planting on the village farm is helpful and greatly appreciated: they're able to fully sow their fields, and with the weather, they're hoping for a good summer harvest. However, no one should let Carolina around farming equipment ever again.

Hunting parties were sent out to stock up on food stores, with overall success. Some of the outsiders are proving themselves to be pretty competent hunters, much to the Barrayarans' appreciation.

Scouts were sent out to comb through the Dendarii Mountains for the other half of the army. With some help from the outsiders, William and Wash in particular, they're able to make contact with the other half of Piotr's army to coordinate and reunite their efforts.

Several parties were sent into Vorkosigan Vashnoi to make contact with the underground civilian resistance, which has a strong presence there, and smuggle weapons out of the city. There's a dangerous chase by Cetagandan patrols, but ultimately they're able to make it out of the city safetly and successfully return with the goods.

On the 10th, a Cetagandan patrol unexpectedly shows up in Riverfall when Sonia, Gavalas, and several others are there. A fight breaks out across the whole village, resulting in more than 30 casualties, including two Vorkosigan armsmen, and the Cetagandans successfully capture Sonia back to their base.

The unabridged mission results can be found here.

cetaganda
Zahal is furious at Piotr's successful biowarfare attack on his base, however accidental. It's devastated his ranks, and while they still outnumber the Barrayarans about forty to one, it's still a serious blow. The ghem-General decides that they need to force a forfeit, and they'll have to do it as quickly as possible, before Vorkosigan can strike them while they're down. The Cetagandan patrols double down and start swarming the mountains in search of the guerrilla camp.

The Star Gate Project is well underway with Micah on board, who is cooperating for the time being, though not happily. Most of their waking hours seem to be spent in the lab, though they're around the mess at mealtimes. They are certainly interested in the work -- it's totally unprecedented -- but their true sympathies lie with Barrayar, and they are entirely uncomfortable working for the Cetagandans. They're currently focusing their research efforts on possible power supplies and solving the problem of what, exactly, is getting people from the wormhole to the planet surface. To speed things along in the lab, the Cetagandans are asking for more help with their research -- anyone with any relevant knowledge is highly encouraged to step forward. And any informants for the Barrayarans are being instructed to keep an eye on Micah, too, as well as their progress on the project.

The Handmaiden of the Star Crèche is seen about the base, for certain definitions of seen -- she travels exclusive in an opaque luminescent force bubble, often escorted by one or two of her ba servitors. At the beginning of the month, Haut Sei announces the gene therapy trials they're conducting: if you're one of the exotics who lost genetically inherited powers, or were made human from some other type of being entirely, you are invited to participate in a new, experimental kind of gene therapy. Why participate? Well, they're aiming to restore any lost powers you might have had, although there's no guarantee of success, and such an experimental treatment does, of course, come with risks. But what's a little reward without risk?

base
The base feels unusually dreary in the wake of the epidemic, and with thousands of dead, it's impossible to have a service funeral for each of them individually. And so dozens of collective funerals are held, each of them solemn and steeped in ornate ceremony. The Cetagandans take their dead as seriously as anybody, and no nonsense will be permitted during the funerals. The base is only operating at half capacity, with only about 5,000 soldiers ready for active duty. Zahal has put in a request for reinforcements from Vorbarr Sultana, but that request has yet to be answered.

Haut Sei officially assumes her authority on base as Handmaiden of the Star Crèche, although Diya is, in name, still the head of the genetics project. Sei's ba entourage is most often seen in her company, but occasionally Ba Talim, one of her most faithful, may be seen on its own around the base, possibly on errand for its lady.

Diya is somewhat more present around the base now that the plague is over, but she still most frequently found in the labs or the gardens, and often in the company of Haut Sei, always in her force bubble, making Diya look strangely naked in comparison. The ghem around the base who have recovered are marking earnest attempts at brightening the morbid atmosphere that's settled over the base by decorating the barracks areas with fresh art -- literally freshly engineerd botanical creations, or sometimes hybrid biological-zoological creations…ah, Cetagandan art.

Princess Sonia is taken into custody on the 10th and housed in a cell. The Cetagandans offer her relative freedom to move about the base if she'll only give them her parole; she stubbornly and furiously refuses for the first several days, but the misery of being stuck in a cell by herself gets to her and she reluctantly agrees. Micah, the Cetagandans' other captive, though less strictly guarded, can most often be found in the labs and the mess. Although they're getting to know some of the exotics extrauniversals, they're still ill at ease here and not thrilled to be here. It isn't entirely clear, though, whether Micah's long hours in the labs are by their choice or at the Cetagandans' behest.

missions
The mess is shorthanded, and the exotics' help is much appreciated. A few of them even manage to impress the Cetagandan mess officer a little, who clearly takes the craft very seriously. (They all do.) A few of you, though…you can stick to dishwashing duty, thanks.

As is now established tradition among the exotics (because anything done twice on Barrayar is tradition, and they have done this way more than twice), several people go eavesdropping. On the 5th, Kurt and Pearl overhear Zahal receiving an Imperial writ to turn the entire Star Gate Project over to the Star Crèche. On the 6th, Jasper and Symmetra are caught listening in on a very personal conversation between Diya and Sei, and Diya's overambitious hopes for herself. On the 8th, Byerly and Lapis eavesdrop on a curious conversation between Ba Talim and Diya, hinting that the decision to cull Diya may have been somewhat personal after all.

In the labs, things go more or less alright, although things keep breaking or exploding. A plasma power pack explodes in the lab with Jasper and Whirl (which may or may not be Whirl's fault), though Jasper saves Micah from serious injury. In another stroke of spectacularly bad luck, one of the Necklin rods they've been using for testing falls and crashes down into one of the lab areas, and it's thanks to Natasha that Micah sustains anything more than minor injury.

Note: Negri, Diya and Gail are available for threading by request. Please hit up Madi (Negri & Diya) or Ammay (Gail) if you'd like some CR with the ghem-Lieutenant!

"It's what I was made for." And Lapis sounds so, so proud of herself when she says that, despite the fact she's scrunching her eyes closed like it might help block out some of the painful light. "I'm normally so much better at it. I could lift entire oceans normally, but this is as far as I've been able to get in this place."

It also doesn't matter how shy this girl is, because right now Lapis just feels spectacular. "They're working on fixing me completely, but I guess it's not something human forms are used to. My powers are probably putting strain on it." It's just a guess.
vorbratta: (stick my head up)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-03 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the news that she's not -- or wasn't -- human isn't shocking at all. Didn't they have a dragon or something here? Sonia doesn't know just how literally Lapis means made for, but the other girl's excitement is infectious, teasing a small smile out of Sonia.

"Oceans? Really?" That sounds...kind of incredible. At any rate, it's the most engaged she's felt since being dragged here. "Maybe you had better sit, though, you...kind of look like you're about to fall over."
mirrortide: (076)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-03 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, oceans." That finally does get a reaction other than excitement from Lapis, who suddenly looks like she notices she is about to collapse. "Good idea." And she looks around with a slight wince, before moving over to the nearest place she can park herself down.

She's still holding onto Sonia, mostly because she hasn't had enough sense to let go.
vorbratta: (while i sweep up the mess)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-04 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Sonia doesn't quite mind. She takes Lapis's arm in hand and steers her back toward the mess, taking up a table near the entrance so she can sit the poor girl down. Sonia has had so little to distract her from the misery of her situation -- even just this small act of paying attention to someone else's problems is a strange relief.

"Headaches?" she asks, eyebrows knit.
mirrortide: (084)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-04 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Lapis confirms with a bit of a squinty nod. "Bad." Worse than it had been when she was hungover, and that had been miserable. But she's not miserable, just in a lot of pain sometimes. "But it's fine. They'll probably end up fixing it. Or giving me something for it later once they figure it out."

Then again, none of them had been kind enough to even offer her a single pain killer when she was hungover.

... But she'd also deserved that one.
vorbratta: (set it up and tear it down)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-04 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"They...?" Sonia looks just a little apprehensive at that, because obviously she means the Cetagandans -- who else -- but were they experimenting on their outsiders? It wouldn't surprise her in the least, but she hadn't heard anything about it.

Then again, no one ever tells her anything.

"What are they doing?" she asks cautiously. "And -- here, is it like a migraine?" She holds her hands out, like she's offering to help.
mirrortide: (084)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-04 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"A migraine?" Is that like, a tier above headache? "I don't know what that is." But shes not going to question the outstretched hand, and holds hers out in return, mimicking the action.

"They call it gene therapy, or whatever. They're basically helping some of us get our powers back." And because she can't shut up, she adds on: "I said I'd help them out with them if they did, but it's been months and they've only just started it. Some geniuses they are. Seriously, could they have taken any longer?"
vorbratta: (around you for a bit)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-04 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Lapis's pantomime gets a small smile out of Sonia despite herself, and she gently pushes Lapis's hands down. "It's like a really bad headache. Here -- is it alright if I touch your face?"

Generally nicer to ask than to just start touching. Most Betans might not mind the unsolicited touch, but...they're not on Beta Colony. Sonia tries to keep the worried frown off her face as Lapis describes in vague terms what's going on, but she thinks she can fill in some of the blanks with what she knows about the outsiders and the Cetagandans. Gene therapy and powers are not concepts that bode well when it comes to the Cetagandans.

"Like your water powers," Sonia fills in, trying to keep the concern off her face, to leave only curiosity. "But how can they be doing gene therapy? I mean...you said you weren't human before, right?"
mirrortide: (100)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-05 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"That's right. I wasn't even organic, I never had genes to fiddle around with to begin with. And sure, touch away." It's a little weird to have someone touch her face, but at least it's not her Gem. She does have to draw the line somewhere, after all.

"And before you ask, since everyone asks, I'm a Gem, Lapis Lazuli." There isn't any annoyance in her tone when she says that, thankfully enough. "We're aliens, basically."
vorbratta: (stick my head up)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-05 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Sonia reaches out to gently touch Lapis's face, pressing in on either side of the bridge of her nose, just below her eyes. "Here, just sit for a minute. These pressure points are supposed to help with headaches."

She blinks, listening, and tilts her head in thought. Well, the alien part makes sense, but she looks vaguely puzzled. She knows much more about genetics than the average Barrayaran, thanks to her mostly-Betan education, although she doesn't exactly have a degree in it.

"Huh. I wonder if there's something weird about your DNA or something." There ought to be. The Cetagandans wouldn't go to this much effort for nothing. She smiles slightly. "It's nice to meet you, Lapis Lazuli. I'm, um...I'm Sonia."
mirrortide: (079)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-05 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sort of hard to sit still, especially when someone is touching her face. The pressure is slightly alarming, but it also helps, surprisingly enough? Hm.

"You can just call me Lapis if you want. Or Lazuli." Her name is kind of a mouthful, and she's not as rude as she is normally, so thankfully she's not asking for her entire name every time. "I don't normally have blood, or DNA. So everything about my blood is weird. It's blue and there's pyrite in it, for starters." And she sounds a little offended about there being pyrite in there.
vorbratta: (while i sweep up the mess)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-11 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Alright, Lapis." It's a pretty name, Sonia thinks. After a minute she moves her fingers to press to Lapis's temples, gently massaging. "Blue blood. Ha. Yes, I'm sure the Cetagandans find it very interesting. But if you have a human...ish form, you've got to have DNA. It's kind of part of the package."
mirrortide: (100)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-11 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
"That's not true." A humanoid form doesn't mean you have DNA. "I mean, if you're organic you probably have it, but I wasn't." Also she doesn't really much care for talking about what the Cetagandans think of her blood, so she doesn't comment about it.

The massage is definitely helping her migraine though. Why are organic bodies so weird?
vorbratta: (so little darlin)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
"That's sort of what I meant by human-ish. In the organic sense, I mean." Sonia does smile just slightly, a tiny tug at the corner of her mouth. She's been looking so dour since she got here.

"So...your powers...the Cetagandans are helping you with that? Why?"
mirrortide: (085)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-12 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"It's probably because I said I'd help them out once they got them working." A Lapis Lazuli can be pretty useful, after all. "I was made to change the landscape of planets, so I'm pretty good at it." And, because she's feeling so generous right now: "I could help your side out too if you wanted. I helped the people in that Riverfall place get some stuff started." It's not like she's beholden to the Ceta's, after all.
vorbratta: (i better keep my two legs running)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-13 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Now that gives Sonia a little bit of whiplash. The smile disappears from her face and she looks at Lapis, her brow knit, mouth slightly open.

"You -- offered to help the Cetagandans with the war? Using those powers?" She sounds a hell of a lot less cavalier about it, and discomfited by the fact that Lapis offered to help her in the same breath.

mirrortide: (007)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-13 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's not hard to see that she's said something wrong, and it's even less hard to know exactly what it was. They're technically on opposite sides of this war after all, aren't they?

"Yes?" She's not going to lie about it, but she does make the effort to move away from Sonia's touch. Just in case. "I- It's not like I'm going to flood your villages, or anything." She tries to gently defend herself.

Even if she had once offered exactly that.
vorbratta: (okay okay dolore)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-16 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That isn't reassuring at all. Sonia pulls her hands back from Lapis's face, confusion and discomfort giving way to indignation.

"So what are you planning to do?" she demands shortly. "And why are you so willing to play both sides?"
mirrortide: (076)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-16 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, now she's absolutely been called out on what she's been doing, and Lapis winces more than obviously. "I just want to go back to what i'm supposed to be. To go back home. The Ceta's are more likely to give me that." It's a poor excuse for helping an invading force, and Lapis knows it.

Steven would probably be disappointed in her.

"I'm a terraformer, changing the landscape of planets is what I do. So, I don't know, carve a few rivers through the ground? Something like that?"
vorbratta: (i better keep my two legs running)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-19 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Everybody wants to go home." She sounds angry now, like Lapis has just delivered a personal insult. "What do you mean, carve a few rivers? To what end? How would that serve the Cetagandans -- or us, for that matter?" Her shoulders hunch slightly as she draws back. "You don't really care what happens to this planet, do you?"
mirrortide: (098)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-19 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know?" But no, she... Doesn't really care about what happens to this planet. "I can shape places, make them more-" and less, "suitable for life and living there. Make them more likely to grow crops and stuff." Lapis fidgets nervously now that she's on the spot. The last thing she really needs is to upset an important potential ally on tbe the other side.

"I do care. I'm stuck here too right now, you know?"
vorbratta: (is it a condition)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-19 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"But once you're no longer on it?" Sonia doesn't just look mad now, she looks hurt. As if she could be hurt by a stranger's intentions -- but she could, if those intentions are threatening enough. Real enough. "You don't care what happens to it then, do you? You don't care who wins this war, just as long as you get to go home."
mirrortide: (098)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-19 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not really any of my business who wins. I'm not the one who has to live here after." Which is absolutely the wrong answer, and Lapis knows it. "If it's any consolation, I've seen a smaller group than yours fight off a stronger invading force and win. It'll probably be the same here." Lapis... thinks, anyway.

"I can't just not help someone who helped me." It's just not how she works.
vorbratta: (okay dolore)

[personal profile] vorbratta 2017-04-21 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"No," Sonia says bitterly, "you aren't." But she is. She and everyone else on Barrayar, they have to live here after -- after whatever it is Lapis plans to do.

"Then you have no reason to help us, do you?" Sonia, looking wounded and angry, gets to her feet, away from Lapis. Lapis's consolation is no consolation at all, just empty words. "Just think very carefully about who you're helping, and how they'd react if you really tried to play both sides. Not that any Barrayaran would want your help, knowing you'd help the Cetagandans crush us."
mirrortide: (098)

[personal profile] mirrortide 2017-04-22 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey! I'm not helping anyone crush anyone else!" She just... also doesn't want to be crushed herself, is that so wrong? "I don't plan on hurting anyone with my powers." Steven would be upset with her if she did, and she'd probably never hear the end of it from Pearl.

... Jasper would probably be fine with it, though. Not that that's what she wants to encourage anyway.
