Amai is as confident bordering on arrogant as ever, the precocious young geneticist seeming especially smug and self-satisfied lately. It might have something to do with the fact that her personal project is the unofficial centerpiece of the flower-viewing party, a project she'd labored on for months, and the opportunity to show it off not only to the entire base, but the Handmaiden herself? Her friends back on Mu Ceta would be livid with envy -- will be, once she sends word back. It is, after all, a tribute to the Star Crèche, the unseen backbone of the Cetagandan Empire. She's all decked out for the flower-viewing party in layered robes of brilliant colors and vivid patterns, her face painted to echo in theme the art piece she's debuting. She acts like the belle of the ball, and she almost is -- the ensemble she's wearing is a show-stealer, and there are some not-so-covert jealous looks at how well-matched she is. Amai is an absolute butterfly during the party, chatting with just about anyone, clearly in high spirits.
As one of Diya's senior staff, she's always worked closely with the haut lady, her admiration of Diya bordering on worshipful. But lately, her favor for Diya seems to be slipping slightly, no longer as awed by her as she has been for so long. Sei, on the other hand, is real haut -- Diya was, once, but she no longer works directly for the Star Crèche, no more than Amai does. But the Handmaiden? The Handmaiden is the haut lady, short of the Dowager Empress. Amai has found a new personal idol, and it shows -- her work brings her into proximity with Haut Sei often enough that Amai takes every opportunity to talk to her, or rather the ba who accompany her everywhere. She's already sensed that Ba Talim is some personal favorite of Sei's, and so she even takes the time to speak to it when it's away from Sei on some errand or another.
And it might not even just be about finding a new personal idol to fixate on. It might be just a bit motivated by the fact that she was involved with Diya's illicit experiments, and that she's trying to put some distance between them if -- when -- that comes to light.
Doctor Amai ghem-Soren
