This wasn't a faked sleep. He fakes sleep quite a lot to get out of things - sex, promises, paying his share of the bill - but fake sleep, just like fake drunkenness, looks different on him. Real sleep, like this, is light, as he wakes up the moment she speaks. It's also a little undignified; he wakes with a loud, ugly snort, a bewildered sort of blinking.
