[ game update: march ]

march
Last month was one hell of a trial. Between the cold freeze and the food shortage for the Barrayarans, nobody was really having a good time. But the traitors responsible have been caught and executed, their security leaks sealed, and they're creating one of their own.

And on the Cetagandan side, things are starting to take what feels like a sinister turn… They're becoming gradually less cagey with the exotics, at least on the topic of wormhole science. They're asking for explicit help in some areas, because what has happened here is unprecedented.

But Riverfall village is now accessible to both sides. Of course, the reception you'll get from the villagers will vary depending on who you've allied yourself with.

weather
Average: Hallelujah, there is a break in the weather. The cold snap starts to recede, slowly bringing the weather to somewhat reasonable temperatures. It'll still be very cold the first week, but it'll start warming up and the piled up snow will gradually start to melt away. By the end of the month, all of the snow at sea level is gone; up in the mountains, there's still a bit left.

After first week, the highs in the mountains average around -2°C/28°F with lows around -20°C/-5°F. Down at sea level, highs for the month average at 1°C/33°F and the lows at -19°C/-2°F.

Food: Sustainable: Thanks to the relief supplies from Beta Colony and the food raids last month, they finally have enough food to go around.
Water: Adequate: The gradual warming of spring finally relieves them -- mostly -- of the burden of having to melt water to drink. Also, they can start taking baths again. Yay!
Weapons/Equipment: Adequate: The relief supplies brought some weapons and materials to make new ones as well. They still have to rely on sword and bow for fear of detection, though.
Medical Supplies: Adequate: The relief from Beta Colony brought a lot of things, but especially medicine. Now they actually have something in the way of contemporary medicine, particularly drugs they wouldn't otherwise have accesst o.
Facilities/Manpower: Adequate: They've managed to do a little more repair on their damaged tents, but don't yet have the means to get or make any new ones.

With the arrival of relief supplies and the excellent party last month, morale in the camp is definitely rising -- it especially helps to see Prince Xav in camp, the second of the Emperor's two sons. He is joined by Piotr's aide-de-camp, Captain Ezar Vorbarra. Thanks to the boost in resources, the outsiders are able to fix up their camp a little. They still don't have an extra tent, but they're letting some outsiders share tents with some soldiers so that they're not so crowded.

    intelligence
The traitors, a small ring led by Captain Aaron Vorbataille, have been rooted out and executed accordingly for their treason. The Barrayarans now know for certain that the Cetagandans are building a device to control the wormhole phenomenon that's pulling people here, but they doubt that the Cetagandans' aims are altogether altruistic. However, they do know of a Betan astrophysicist hiding out in Vorkosigan Vashnoi, the district's capital, who might be able to help.

Food: Sustainable: No changes from last month. Their mix of local supplies and their own grown produce and meat has been sustaining the base just fine.
Water: Abundant: Particularly now that the freeze is over, their water treatment plant is performing even better.
Weapons/Equipment: Abundant: They still have plenty in the way of equipment, and a healthy stock of power packs for firearms.
Medical Supplies: Sustainable: There've been some injuries here and there from one skirmish or another, but for the most part, they're doing just fine with medicine.
Facilities/Manpower: Abundant: No changes here. They still outnumber Piotr's camp by over 60 to 1.

The Cetagandans aren't desperate, but they certainly are facing a lot of roadblocks in their wormhole research, so they've explicitly sought the exotics' help. The recent breakout has soured the atmosphere a bit; while the Cetagandans are still perfectly civil, they're cracking down on security and keeping a closer eye on the exotics.

    intelligence
Meanwhile, some of the exotics have been getting a glimpse at some behind-the-scene politics -- for instance, that Diya and Zahal disagree on how to handle the exotics, and Diya's own apparently illicit genetic operations. Diya remains cagey as ever, but Doctor Amai ghem-Soren, the ghem geneticist who seems to be in on her project, seems to be having second thoughts. And on top of all that, the Handmaiden of the Star Crèche -- someone apparently very important -- is on her way to Barrayar.
