welcome to barrayar.
It's the dark of night when you come to in the foothills. Snow on the ground, chill winter wind whistling -- in fact, it's dangerously cold, and all you have is the clothes on your back.. A steep mountain range towers just ahead, its peaks illuminated by the light of two moons. Whatever you last remember, it isn't how you got here, and you feel oddly jetlagged, slightly queasy.

And you're not alone. There are a few other people close by, all looking equally lost and confused. But before any of you have a chance to figure out what's going on, the soldiers arrive. There's a war on, they say, and you unlucky bastards have just been dropped right smack in the middle of it.

With March comes some relief. The first few days to a week are still bitterly, dangerously cold, but the weather starts to pick up gradually over the course of the next couple of months. It only gets barely above freezing, but after the last month, it might as well be a summer's day.

riverfall
The party last month definitely boosted morale, and certainly brought the outsiders closer to the villagers. They're noticeably friendlier toward the outsiders afterward, although they still give the exotics and their accompanying ghem soldiers the evil eye.

Given the village's covert assistance with the war effort and the fact that the Cetagandans found enough data to include the village in its regular patrols, Riverfall has become sort of a middle ground between the two sides. Coinciding visits don't happen every day, but they can provide opportunities for the two factions to secretly meet. Of course, this always carries a risk…best be sure not to be caught by either side's soldiers. Thanks to Negri, the Barrayarans roughly know the patrol schedule.

barrayar
Temperatures are still pretty low by the time March rolls around, and the first week is considerably cold, but it's steadily getting warmer as the month goes on. By the second week, it's just warm enough to start taking baths again -- and boy is there ever a queue.

On the 2nd, a small troop of soldiers arrives, led by Prince Xav Vorbarra, Olivia and Sonia's father, and Piotr's aide-de-camp Captain Ezar Vorbarra, a distant cousin of theirs. They bring with them a load of relief supplies fom Beta Colony, improving not only their food and medicine situation, but some to pass on back to the Riverfall villagers in return for their help. Anyone lurking around at night might see Ezar talking to Negri from time to time as well, and Sonia seems to be getting up to some kind of mischief where Ezar is concerned.

Prince Xav gives Piotr a very helpful tipoff -- there's a Betan biochemist waiting in the occupied district capital, Vorkosigan Vashnoi, to rendezvous with him on his way back off Barrayar. Xav can't stay long; he needs to find another way off-planet, and Doctor Micah Niadem has been laying low in Vorkosigan Vashnoi, but the risk of their presence being detected grows with every day. It may be easier and safer to smuggle them back to the camp than try to get them back off-planet for now -- and besides, their expertise in astrophysics might prove useful. But Xav hasn't yet been able to make contact through the soldiers occupying the city, so Piotr sends his own scouts.

Piotr, with Xav and Ezar as advisors, is trying to come to a decision about what to do about the Cetagandans' wormhole project. There's no telling what the Cetagandans really intend to do with the wormhole device, but disrupting or destroying their project would mean no way home for the outsiders, and…Piotr no longer feels that to be the most honorable option. That, and the idea of this technology in Cetagandan hands does them no favors. But their intelligence on the project is limited -- Byerly will prove to be a useful intelligent asset, certainly, but Piotr is looking for more informants. Any outsiders willing and able to make connections with any exotics sympathetic to the cause would certainly be appreciated by the General.

plague
Early in the month, some of the villagers begin to get sick -- it looks just like a particularly nasty cold at first. It quickly worsens and spreads to the camp, and by the 7th it is evident there is an outbreak of the Barrayaran flu, an influenza variant that has mutated over the last several centuries. Barrayarans have built up antibodies against most strains, but this is a particularly virulent strain, and with a population that has neither vaccines nor modern medicine, it can be fatal. The recent cold snap and limited food haven't exactly fortified anyone's immune systems, either, and in the first half of the month, about half the population of the village and camp come down with the flu at some point.

Although the virus isn't spreading much more quickly than your average flu, it's still a nasty infection, and the symptoms are difficult to effectively treat without proper equipment of facilities. Some of the relief supplies brought by Prince Xav include surgical masks and gloves for the people working triage to protect them from the airborne illness as much as possible. The supplies also include some analgesics and synergine, but hardly enough to go around. Fevers, aches and chills, coughing, vomiting -- they treat them with what they have once they run out of relief supplies. And for the most part, those with the flu manage to pull through and recover -- but if the flu turns to pneumonia, there's almost nothing they can do at that point. Thanks to the tireless efforts of villagers, soldiers, and some outsiders, the first half of the month sees only a 10% mortality rate between the village and the camp, resulting in only 23 influenza-related deaths.

Sonia is among the first to get sick, but she sweats it out in five days or so and manages a full recovery. Olivia, on the other hand, falls much more seriously ill. Piotr takes great care not to get sick; the camp is already incapacitated as it is.

camp
Camp morale is still buckling under the weight of crisis after crisis, but the arrival of Prince Xav and the improving weather have done a lot to lighten the mood. Xav and Ezar coordiate to distribute the relief supplies even as the flu ravages the camp and village, never a dull moment . Olivia and Sonia haven't seen their father Xav in over two years, and it's a long-overdue family reunion. Piotr welcomes the return of his friend and aide-de-camp Ezar, and Sonia seems to be getting into some kind of mischief with her cousin. And in a quiet moment here and there, Ezar can be seen talking to Negri.

By the morning of the 1st, Byerly Vorrutyer will have abruptly disappeared from camp.

Piotr is trying to keep military operations running as much as he can while half the camp tends to the sick or fall sick themselves. They'd found the traitors, yes, but Piotr's anger is far from satisfied. The food shortage had derailed their power supply strategy, and it's only further pushed back by this current crisis, so large operations are off the table. But Piotr has never underestimated the value of psychological warfare in this war. He has a few conveniently available corpses for hacking up and planting in the Cetagandan base just to shake things up a little, and anyone who can lift a sword without coughing is qualified. Xav does not approve.

missions
The medical assistance provided by the outsiders doesn't go unappreciated, nor without effect. Not every day is a success, but they manage to keep the mortality rate relatively low.

The infiltration missions to plant the severed body parts mostly go according to plan, although Lakshmi and Nash run afoul of some guards. Between the outsiders and other Barrayaran squads, they manage to plant several body parts, and in doing so, inadvertently spread the Barrayaran flu to the Cetagandans.

The outsiders scouting out Vorkosigan Vashnoi manage to stay undetected by Cetagandan soldiers, although they run into exotics on the other side. They manage to get some information about Micah's location, but very little…thankfully, Byerly passes on to Miles much more specific information the exotics were able to obtain.

Here are the unabridged mission results.

cetaganda
The snow piled up around the base starts to gradually melt over the course of the month as temperatures rise. The new wave of exotics are processed and very gently prodded like every group has been, but they've been treated with the same level of civility. The Cetagandans are generally exceedingly polite, but they are becoming a little less patient with the exotics after the recent bouts of violence and escapism.

Despite the Barrayaran flu sweeping the base, military operations must carry on. Zahal might have lost his informants in the Barrayaran camp, but he knows they've been struggling, and wants to implement some more aggressive tactics to hit them while they're down -- and more than that, the dead body parts of his own soldiers scattered around the base have had their intended effect, rattling and aggravating the ghem-General -- even more so when they realize that this was the means by which the plague spread to the base. Whatever organized strategy Zahal starts to pull together is immediately disrupted by the rapid spread of the virus through the base. With Cetagandan soldiers dropping like flies, military operations all but come to a halt on the base.

However, Cetagandan intelligence gets wind of a Barrayar-allied astrophysicist from Beta Colony, a planet renowned for its cutting-edge technological advances, particularly in the field of wormhole science; they may be able to solve some of the pieces of the puzzle. The Betan scientist is apparently hiding out in Vorkosigan Vashnoi, the capital city of the city. The virus has spread there too; Barrayarans and Cetagandans alike are facing the outbreak, although the native population seems to be faring a bit better. The Cetagandans need help bringing medical supplies, so while they're at it, the ghem-General dispatches a few teams to try and sniff out the scientist's location. Meanwhile, in the R&D labs, some of the exotics who have been promoted to lab assistant are helping the Cetagandans to make some advancements, and they're finally let in on some more details about the project.

plague
A few days into the month, some of the soldiers start to show cold-like symptoms -- and then the outbreak of Barrayaran influenza spreads rapidly throughout the base. Unlike the Barrayarans, the Cetagandans have no antibodies for this strain, and even their advanced immune systems cannot defend them against a totally new pathogen. They are infected even more quickly than the Barrayarans and their symptoms escalate rapidly as well, resulting in an alarming mortality rate. Cetagandan soldiers are falling sick left and right. Triage starts in the medbay, but they have to quarantine off another wing of the building just to make room for the rapidly growing population of infected ghem. The airborne virus is spreading through the base at an alarming speed -- save for Byerly, no one on base has ever been exposed to it. The symptoms are severe and while the Cetagandans have plenty of equipment, they have neither an antiviral nor a vaccine for the Barrayaran flu. High fever, vomiting, dehydration, respiratory and sinus problems run rampant, and though they have plenty in the way of synergine and analgesics, the Barrayaran flu quickly leads to pneumonia in most Cetagandan patients, and with their immune systems so completely unprepared, most patients with pneumonia die within 24 to 48 hours. The triage assistants are, at least, provided with surgical masks and gloves and antibacterial gel by the bucket load to protect them from the airborne illness as much as possible. By mid-month, nearly two thirds of the base has been infected.

The medical staff scrambles to put up a quarantine while also working on a vaccine for the uninfected population on the base. Byerly, being the only person on base who has ever been exposed to the Barrayaran flu, offers a blood sample -- potentially containing antibodies to this strain. Some of the Cetagandans' testing methods are a little ethically questionable, but they're trying to work fast. They're able to develop a working vaccine with a projected effectiveness of 70%.

Toward the middle of the month, Amai catches the flu and is laid low for about a week. Diya and Zahal take great care not to catch it -- Diya seems particularly absent lately.

base
Paranoia of infection hovers over the entire base, but some of the Cetagandans are concerned with another upcoming event: the arrival of the Handmaiden of the Star Crèche. What the Handmaiden of the Star Crèche actually is or does seems to be rather vague to the exotics -- she seems to play some role in genetic politics -- but it's known that she's haut, like Diya. The Cetagandans are scrambling to prepare for her arrival with considerable worry about resolving the flu epidemic before she touches down. The Cetagandans are about as close to cultural panic as they get right now. Diya received personal notice from the Handmaiden of the Star Crèche herself.

Starting on the 1st, Byerly Vorrutyer joins the exotic ranks as an undercover agent, looking not only for information but to potentially recruit exotics sympathetic to the Barrayaran cause.

Meanwhile in the labs, the Cetagandans have been letting the exotics get a little more hands-on with their research. Natasha, York and Symmetra have risen a bit in the ranks and are brought in on more specific projects. The ghem ladies are, surprisingly, now looking for volunteers to work in the gene labs too -- personnel shortage, of course.

missions
Even though a few of their own fall prey to the illness, the exotics' medical assistance does wind up being quite helpful, particularly with development of the vaccine. Meanwhile, eavesdroppers are doing their usual business and digging deep in places they shouldn't -- particularly where Amai and Diya are concerned.

The exotics that accompany the Cetagandans to Vorkosigan Vashnoi manage to stay undetected by Barrayaran soldiers, although they run into exotics on the other side. They are able to get some very detailed information about Micah's location, which Byerly passes back to the Barrayarans via Miles.

Here are the unabridged mission results.

Note: Negri and Zahal are available for threads by request only. Please hit up Madi or Ammay respectively for you want threads with either of those NPCs. You can also request a thread with Village Speaker Yakiv Gura if you want, in which case hit up Madi.

[BARRAYAR] Piotr Vorkosigan (NPC)

[personal profile] oldvor 2017-03-04 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The warming weather is a welcome change, and it puts Piotr in a better mood -- relatively speaking to his moods, of course. But Ezar's return to camp has certainly lightened his mood to new heights -- Piotr is dour by default, but you might even catch him exchanging a friendly smile with Ezar. He is Piotr's friend as well as his aide-de-camp, and it shows. I know, I know. Piotr having friends is weird.

But other than that, it's business as usual. The flu epidemic has brought on a whole new host of concerns, morale among them, but others much more pressing. He takes great care to stay away from sickbay -- not out of loathing nor discompassion for his wife, but because he knows he can't afford to get sick, not now of all times.

a. i called up the moon for a little consultation
The intelligence they have on the Cetagandans' wormhole research is enough to make it significant, but there's still much they don't know, and without more information it's hard to make a sound judgment. Piotr spends long nights in the war tent with Ezar and Xav and his general staff, but it's intelligence they're really lacking. If you think you might know someone sympathetic on the other side, or risk trying to make a connection, Piotr will hear you out.

b. if you pray to god for rain, don't you complain about the lightning
Even with the flu epidemic ravaging the camp, military operations must go on, and Piotr will send any able-bodied soul willing to pick up a sword. If you've got something to report -- or maybe you want to ask the General something -- he is almost always in the war tent these days. But if you're sick, he'll turn you away immediately.

c. if you're asking for directions, don't you complain about the distance (closed to ezar)
Piotr is glad to have his aide-de-camp back, and to see his old friend again. He really is. But that doesn't mean he isn't still thoroughly annoyed after the little chat he'd had with Negri.

He checks the area around the war tent for Negri, but the little bugger's awfully good at hiding, and if he's anything like Piotr suspects he is, Ezar will have put him out of sight. So as it is, he just waits at the mouth of the tent for Ezar, eyebrows raised.

"Got time for a chat, Captain?"

She comes in late one night where she can still the light still burning. It might be because when she was tending Olivia, she said something to her about checking on him, it might just be habit, knowing how little she had slept when she ruled over such efforts.

But she comes in with a tray of food from the mess, and a nod to the guards at the tent entrance. Her purpose clear enough, and one that's fairly innocent. The knife she'd been given for her attendance to the Countess is comfortably slotted into her belt at her waist. Always in easy reach. It's an easy place to step between, domestic and military. Being a Queen was often a dance between the two.

Once she's inside, she clears her throat, waiting to get his attention. Once she has it, she nods to the plate and then his desk, expectantly waiting for him to clear a space for her to set it down.

There is a beat before he looks up -- not out of rebuttal, but genuine concentration on his work. He eyes the plate and, a bit reluctantly, rolls up a map to make room on the battered table. He doesn't look altogether displeased, though, and he quirks an eyebrow up at Lakshmi.

"Did the Countess send you?"
shri: (» we are the hearts)

[personal profile] shri 2017-03-05 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Not in so many words."

She strides forward as he rolls up the map. Balancing the tray at the edge of the table and against her hip as she begins to unload the tray of food. The plain meal that they all favoured, and it wasn't completely unpalatable to her. Much as her own father had liked to tease her for eating still like a common woman when she had all the riches of a queen to prepare meals from.

"Indeed, I am sure she will not even ask, but she will take her own meals better when I - " Pauses as she gets the cup of tea last, set out the other side of his plate, cutlery beside it. Leaning over him in the barest contact. " - can tell her I've seen you eat at least once."

A small twist, but she thinks she will have an easier time getting him to eat if he thinks it will benefit the Countess. She straightens, pulling the carrying tray out of the way.

Well, she is right on the mark about Olivia. Piotr lets out a little hm, not of disapproval or annoyance, maybe just vaguely amused.

"Oh, I'm sure she will ask." Because it really is Olivia who pulls him back, who keeps him steady every time. His men, they all underestimate her worth in this war, and not just as his support. She is as a pillar in this camp.

Piotr is still until she straightens up, and then he gestures for her to sit. Truth be told, he could probably use a little company, but he's a bit weary of most people. But Rani's just gotten back, and he always did like her. She is a woman of great honor, and that speaks to Piotr.

"Then it's best I have an answer ready for her."

It's mild as she bows her head in thanks for the invitation. Taking the spot across from him, her hands settling against the arms of her chair, and her back settling stiff. As close as she got to... well, relaxed, especially since she had come back from the Cetagandan's company. It's left her stiff on all her edges that she's slow to let her back stiffen now.

"I've done my best to keep her in good cheer, though I imagine seeing her father is the best for her." Answer to the next question that she would be asking, really.
oldvor: (pic#10679829)

[personal profile] oldvor 2017-03-08 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Piotr nods. "Just so. The last time Prince Xav visited our camp was a little over two years ago. He's usually off planet -- coming down here at all is a massive risk. The Cetagandans' wormhole blockade is not easy to get around."

He starts in on his food and then pauses, looking back up at her. "Care to join me, Rani? It's not all that appetizing, I know, but it would be rude to eat while a lady goes hungry."
shri: (» their legacy's too hard to take)

[personal profile] shri 2017-03-09 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
She hesitates, unsure on manners, on what is polite, as she looks over his face in invitation. It hadn't been her place to eat in front of men, and it wasn't often she shared meals with her husband either. Eating for women was privately done where they did not have to wear veils and could be comfortable. In recent years, of course, it hadn't mattered worth a damn. But they weren't in a brothel in slums, were they?

By the same, she supposes he wasn't the kind of man to trick about that, so she nods, and reaches for a small portion of food for herself in a murmur of thanks. Something dry and light that she can pick at, as much as is respectful to the offer. ( Always aware, Queen she might be, but not Queen of nothing much anymore, and she was ever at his and his wife's grace. ) So she's careful with it, some habits of royalty never quite went away. Her bites are small, easy gestures, raising a hand to her mouth to cover herself as she swallows.

"I can imagine so. His risks much - but I suppose we all do for family."
oldvor: (pic#10679830)

[personal profile] oldvor 2017-03-14 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Not only for family. For all of Barrayar."

A thing that Piotr does respect about Xav, as a man, not just as his father-in-law or his Prince. Significant, considering there's very little that he and Xav agree on politically. Piotr vents out a slow sigh, stirring a precious bit of maple syrup into his groats. It makes them marginally less bland.

"Early on in the war, Olivia and Sonia were both sent to my district -- for their safety, as the capital was in utter chaos at the time, and Emperor Dorca wanted no harm to come to his only granddaughters. Initially, Prince Xav hoped to get them both off-planet, back to Beta Colony with their mother and brother, but it quickly became too dangerous to even make the attempt."

Not that Olivia would leave now, of course. Though Piotr wouldn't entirely mind if Xav spirited Sonia away.
shri: (» the future runs through our bones)

[personal profile] shri 2017-03-14 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
She listens, and in that way, she is rewarded for her patience. Piotr is at the best of time, a man of a few words, and she is happy to hear them just for that alone. But there is more to it, she is still learning this planet, its customs, its habits. Careful and slow, she tries not to give the full force of that. Her eyes lowered to her food, nodding as needed, her bites still small.

"I did the same, in the battle of Gwalior." She offers in return, breaking another piece of the dry biscuit off, between her fingers. Holding it a moment. "The second day of what would become five, I sent my son with my closest -" english, rani, and she hovers on the word for him, rather than the language of her memories. "- guards woman. I knew as it stretched on and we became more entrenched, it would impossible to get anyone out."
oldvor: (pic#10679827)

[personal profile] oldvor 2017-03-18 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Piotr tilts his side to the head in acknowledgment of this sharing. It's true he's not a man to share much, but Lakshmi is one of the few with whom he doesn't mind. He still works at his groats, noting how excessively polite Lakshmi is being with her food. She makes for such an interesting woman. It's no surprise Olivia has taken to her so much.

"Were you able to see him again?"
shri: (» but if we go we go together)

[personal profile] shri 2017-03-18 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as exchanges go, it's an easy one, and she prefers talking on their common ground. Things she prefers to be traded on. Battle stories and parental affection, rather than queen and count. Things easily understood. Means that she affords the deep breath with her eyes flatly on the table, the things she takes such pains to not discuss with most of them - they didn't have families or kingdoms or children of their own so often when she spoke with them. How could they understand? What it was like to lose them, and to make the choice that the life you could give with them was not the best for them?

"No. No I have not heard... anything of my homeland for many years now. He was so young you see? Most... believe me to be dead. I would put both our lives at risk to dissuade anyone of the notion."

She took another mouthful, dry, before she clears her throat and does as she does best: carries on. Idly presses her thumb against her lips to remove a crumb in a particular action to remove herself from the weight of those words. "And you, Count? Your children? I am afraid I never got a full account for them. Simply won't do, if I am apparently in the business of guarding your family."
oldvor: (pic#10679826)

[personal profile] oldvor 2017-03-20 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Piotr is past familiarity by now with the necessities of war. He knows Lakshmi is, too. So rather than offering sympathy, condolences, comfort, he merely nods and murmurs, "I understand."

Her question does bring the slightest hesitation, and then Piotr tilts his head to the side slightly in a vague sort of shrug gesture. "Olivia and I have yet to have children. Ordinarily by now, five years is plenty of time to bear an heir and a few others, but..." But war, really. He does let out a terse sigh, more a long breath through his nose as he stirs his groats. "I'm sure you can imagine. Our situation is hardly stable, let alone hospitable to a pregnant woman. Many women bear children during war time, of course -- but as you know, Olivia spent the majority of her childhood on Beta Colony, where the majority of children are incubated in their uterine replicator devices, which -- as she is so fond of telling me -- pose much less risk to both mother and child than a body birth."

If he sounds a little suspicious and dismissive of this technology, that's because he is. Galactics.

"Obviously, we have no access to such devices on Barrayar, which, as I am given to believe, require much technical knowledge and maintenance. But I certainly sympathize with my wife's desire to live through her first pregnancy."

For once in his life, Miles has good news to report back to Piotr. Not really through any contributions of his own - damned Barrayaran prejudices extending even to the city - but by sheer luck in finding Byerly out on the same mission. Well. He'll take it. Better to be lucky than good.

He expects this to be brief, but he needs to report this in person. Both due to the nature of his source and the importance of the information. "Sir," he says, once he's in the tent and Piotr has acknowledged him. Or at least looks as though he won't bite Miles' head off for speaking. "We found an address and specific contacts for Dr. Niadem."

Somehow he manages not to be exited or smug about the information, despite internally buzzing more than a bottle of bees. But he is reasonably pleased with himself. He's allowed that much, isn't he?

However little patience Piotr may have for Miles on most days, that doesn't fail to catch his attention. He's not so petty a man that he would prioritize his dislike of the little man over valuable information. Invaluable, at this point. He waves Miles over to the table, eyes intent.

"Tell me." Go on, Miles, give him that report.

He rattles off the name and the address. And then pauses. Alas, he can't take credit for having found the info, and he is not about to hide his source. A matter of principle and practicality both. "Byerly passed the information on to us," he says simply. "Our own efforts were less successful." And if he loses points for that, fine, but it's too important that Byerly get credit for his plan working. "That means that Cetaganda will have the information too. I've asked him to delay them as best he can, but ..."

He hardly needs to finish that sentence, surely. They're on a time limit here. A race to beat Cetaganda to the punch.

Piotr's eyes narrow in thought, his expression unreadable.

"If he has it, so do the rest of them, and there's only so much he can do on his own. We'll have to act quickly. Well done," he says abruptly. "If nothing else, he may be able to find something we can use to undermine the Cetagandan effort. What's the status of their base>:

Well done. Those two simple words make him about dizzy with joy; he has to duck his head to keep from making a fool of himself. He'd throw it all away if he grinned like a loon now. Keep it together, Miles.

"Just so," he says. "The sooner we move, the better." As for the rest ... he snaps his head back up, glad to have another good answer on hand. Or a least a decent plan. "Byerly reports that most of the exotics are sympathetic to Barrayar. Or at least deeply distrustful of Cetaganda." For damn good reason. For once he's glad that their culture is kind of weird, at best. "With some coordination, we can build a decent spy network."

As for the base itself, well - he rattles off the details that Byerly's passed so far. Supply status and the like. Between both men's tactics and Byerly's keen insight, it's a good report.

Piotr rubs the two-day growth of beard on his chin, eyes narrowed in thought. "If you can pull off a blind drop with each potential informant, then we should be able to avoid compromising Vorrutyer's cover. I want you to bring a report on every potential informant to me. They'll each need their own handler."

He listens to the rest of Miles's report, nodding, eyes narrowed. "And what's the medical status on the base? Has the plague spread there?"

God, he hopes so. It'd serve them right.

And Miles will be the spymaster? Well - even if not, he's glad not to be the handler for everyone. That seems a challenge he'd rather not take on in full. "Sir," he says, inclining his head. "I'll have a full list next time. Byerly should have enough information by then." He could probably put one together now, but better to get everything tied in a bow.

As for the medical situation ... He'd normally be damned cheery about that bit of news, but Byerly had been miserable. Guilty, even. Miles can't quite fault him. "Misery abounds," he says slowly. "They've never encountered our particular strain before, so it's spread like wildfire. By the time they make a vaccine they'll surely all have been sick."

Piotr smiles.

It's not a pleasant smile. His lips pull back from his teeth in a definite smile, but it's nasty, bitter, fierce in his eyes. He has rare occasion to smile these days. But the misfortune of his enemy -- that's always an occasion to smile.

"Good," he breathes. For a moment, he feels utterly vindicated. "Good."

Miles doesn't know what to make of that smile. He'd seen it before on his grandfather's face, mostly when some fool Count had made a damned nuisance of himself and paid dearly for it. And seeing it directed at the Cetagandans should not be surprising. But ... it's first smile he's seen out of the not-so-old man, and strangely uplifting. He'll take it. Even if it is morbid.

That pushes another thought to the forefront of his mind. "We may manage a raid like this, sir. With them incapacitated." To rescue York maybe, or at least to get some damn medical supplies. Miles feels his own internal clock ticking away again. How long until his next seizure?

"With our supplies as they are now, we need one anyway," Piotr mutters, half to himself. The smile is gone now, but that fierce glint in his eyes persists. Oh, he wishes he could see Zahal's face right now. That face-painted son of a bitch must be in apoplectic fits by now. Is it too much to hope that the ghem-General himself catches the flu and dies choking on his own lungs? Ah, maybe. But Piotr will dream.

"This will certainly make it easier. We'll assemble every able body we can spare and hit them hard while we can." A flicker of that smile returns briefly. "Then we'll see just how much harder the epidemic hits them."

Miles nods firmly in agreement. It makes sense all around. And if he gets a chance to swipe anticonvulsants while he's there, then all the better. "Yes sir," he says. "I'll assist in any way I can."

Piotr nods back brusquely. "You can start with passing orders on to Vorrutyer. He is to begin actively cultivating any potential informants on the other side -- without revealing his cover. Anyone who looks promising, he can pass that lead on to you -- and you to me."

He nods at the tent. "You're dismissed, Illyan."
