The jubilant atmosphere in the Barrayaran camp doesn't die out, but it does shift back into the sense of intense focus on their next task, their exhilarating victory driving them forward. The attitudes toward the outsiders are gradually lightening -- the fact that two of them rescued Princess Sonia has gone a long way toward fostering good will. While Prince Yuri and Colonel Vorvolk are still staunch their position of mistrust, Dorca is now openly showing support for Piotr's decision, tipping the balance of politics among the top brass -- which always has a trickle-down effect. But it's a slow spread, and while some of the other soldiers have turned entirely grateful to the outsiders for their part in the attack, for most of them they're only just starting to tone down the hostility. But the shift in atmosphere, however gradual, is clear: the outsiders are starting to fall back into favor with the soldiers.

Vorvolk himself still remains unconvinced, and in the downtime between briefings, can be seen frequently in conference with Piotr, and they don't often look to be in agreement. The fact that the body of Falco Vorkalloner, one of the more vocal anti-outsider dissidents, was found dead shortly before the attack only throws things into hotter contest: although as far Lakshmi and Sisko, the ones to discover the body, reported to him, it appeared to be an accidental death. Colonel Vorvolk remains suspicious considering the timing, but a funeral for Vorkalloner complete with death offerings is held on the 19th. If one is positioned correctly in certain circles, too, one may overhear more talk about the increasingly tense succession politics – talk, say, about finding Yuri a new wife so he can produce another heir. Yuri, perhaps surprisingly, seems reluctant, and harshly bites off the subject every time it comes up.

Lapis has requested a note be delivered to Sonia through the villagers, and Sonia rushes to show it to Piotr. While the gene therapy trials weren't news – and subsequently dire conclusions could be drawn from it – any deals with Jackson's Whole are news, and dangerous at that. If the Cetagandans release the outsiders' gene complexes to the Jacksonians, they might as well be releasing them into the wild: there'll be no hope of permanently recovering them. Piotr is going to want the his handlers to pass on this information to their informants so that they can keep an eye out for any new developments or ways to sabotage the deal.

Scouts are sent to Vorkosigan Vashnoi to further coordinate their efforts with the civilian underground resistance in the city and move on to the next step in their plans to retaking the city. The attack on the base had been meant to force Zahal to withdraw some of his troops from the city, and it works – except that according to Barrayaran intelligence, by May 21st he has recalled the entire occupying force from Vorkosigan Vashnoi.

At approximately three o'clock in the morning on May 22nd, the night sky goes ablaze with a sudden flash of light. The sound of the explosion doesn't follow for another minute, but even at night, the mushroom cloud is clearly visible from the mountains. And even at night, given the vantage point, it's clear that this means only one thing: the Cetagandans have just bombed Vorkosigan Vashnoi.

There's nothing left of the city -- the Cetagandans went nuclear on it, obliterating the city and all its inhabitants and leaving nothing but an irradiated crater behind. Morale in the camp takes a sharp U-turn after the total destruction of the district's capital. Not only were they on the verge of successfully retaking the city, it's the capital of the district, and a symbol of hope for many of the soldiers, especially those from the district -- or it was, anyway. Now there's nothing left of it. Everything they've been working toward for the last few months, everything they've struggled toward -- simply gone.

The soldiers all react in different ways. Most of them are furious, angry like a wounded beast, despairing but only more determined to eliminate the Cetagandan threat to them. Many of them weep openly in grief or despair -- lost family and friends, a lost home -- and some are simply stunned into numbness at so dramatic an escalation. The Barrayarans are badly thrown, and they need to regroup before Cetagandan strikes again.

The unabridged mission results can be found here.

Thanks to the Barrayarans' extremely effective sabotage, there's no hope of getting the main or backup power generator back in operating oder until their next supply drop arrives with reinforcements -- still weeks away. Most of the base is without power, which also means no running water, no refrigeration, and no way of recharging their weapons' power packs. As much is being done by daylight as possible, including pre-preparing meals -- still a mix of MREs and fresh food, but especially the latter, as they have no way of keeping it from spoiling, but when they run out of fresh food from the Grow Labs, the base's denizens are stuck with MREs and rather unpalatable ration bars. Thankfully, the water treatment plant has a considerable buffer, so while they may not have running water, they do at least have some manually retrievable potable water for the time being. Hey folks, if you ever wondered what it's like for the Barrayarans roughin' it up out there in the mountains, here is a tiny fraction of what that's like.

On the night of the 20th, Diya is discovered dead. According to Sei, she was attacked and killed by Natasha -- for what exact reason, Sei cannot claim to know, but this clearly marks Natasha as a dangerous entity. Natasha flees the base that night in a hijacked groundcar, leaving no one to fast-penta and no witness but Sei and Ba Talim, and -- even though it would be an affront to suggest it -- haut and ba are immune to fast-penta. An elaborate but solemn funeral is held for Diya on the 21st. It's about what you've probably come to expect of Cetagandan functions, but the mood is distinctly different. There is still a lot of poetry reading. When not in uniform, Zahal now dresses in mourning colors.

The one building that does still have power is the building containing the medbay and gene labs, powered by the secondary backup generator that clearly exists for that express purpose: if all else fails, protect the interests of the Star Crèche. However, even with the base's population reduced, there are still thousands of people who need power, and Zahal is in a heated argument with the haut over redirecting power from the secondary backup generator to other vital base functions. The secondary backup generator does not possess the capacity to power the entire base, but some of its power could definitely be rerouted to select other areas. By May 21st, the barracks and mess have limited power -- just barely enough to get running water and the most basic of kitchen functions running. A little bit of power is rerouted to one of the undamaged research buildings for continued research on the Star Gate Project, since it's of nearly as much interest as the genetics research.

By May 21st, Zahal has recalled the entire occupying force from Vorkosigan Vashnoi. This means a couple thousand soldiers have now returned to the base, but they're still badly undermanned. Reinforcements are slated to arrive along with a supply drop at the start of next month, but until then, it's time to make do. Some of the repairs can at least be started manually, so any off-duty soldiers and willing and able bodies will be asked to lend a hand to start fixing up some of the base now that it's more cleaned up.

At approximately three o'clock in the morning on May 22nd, the night sky goes ablaze with a sudden flash of light. The sound of the explosion doesn't follow for another minute, but even at night, the mushroom cloud is clearly visible from the upper perimeter of the base. And even if you don't have the vantage point to see it for yourself, it doesn't take long for word to get around: the Cetagandans have just bombed Vorkosigan Vashnoi.

Apparently Zahal was able to pull together enough resources to drop a nuclear bomb on the city, utterly destroying it and everyone in it. Judging by the surprise of the rank and file, this was not a long-planned maneuver, but a direct response to the Barrayarans' attack. It isn't the sort of measure they're supposed to resort to so quickly -- the city itself is a valuable resource, and it gave them leverage -- but Zahal is furious.

Between Diya's sudden death and the bombing, the atmosphere around the base is suddenly tense and uneasy. While the Cetagandans have hardly felt threatened by the exotics, after Natasha's supposed recent actions, there's a growing mistrust. The victory might go to the Cetagandans, but it doesn't really feel like it.

Micah's cheeks go slightly pink, though it's hard to tell underneath all the tear tracks. They swallow and duck their head, but they're smiling just slightly more now.

"I -- don't know what to say to that," they admit, sidling into their quarters and gesturing Deanna in after them. "But...I'm glad. Thank you. Oh, er, let me just -- "

The solitary bed in the room has flimsies and a few datapads strewn all over it, around a vaguely person-shaped space in the bed where Micah has evidently been curled up sleeping. They hastily pile a few folders' worth of flimsies on the datapads and shove it all to the end of the bed so that Deanna can sit.

Deanna's smile grows alongside Micah's as she watches them clear space for her. "You don't have to say anything. I only wish I could share with you more... directly."

"Directly?" Micah's hands flutter uselessly for a moment before they invite Deanna to sit, perching on the edge of the bed themself. "You mean with your empathic abilities?"

"Mmm. Sometimes... With people I care deeply for, we can forge a mental connection, even if they aren't Betazoid." And Goddess, how she misses that connection.

This time it's much harder to mask the flush on Micah's cheeks as a byproduct of crying, even though their eyes are still a little watery, unable to completely shake the bad emotional tremors the bombing of Vorkosigan Vashnoi has left them with. Micah smiles a little, sniffling still, and rests their chin in their hands.

"I can only imagine what that's like." They sound a little wistful about it, their voice thick. After a moment they reach out to touch Deanna's hand, their face earnest and serious even behind the slightly flustered look. "I'm sorry. I can't even imagine what it must be like to lose something like that. But I'm going to get you home, Deanna. I'll make sure of it."

"I know you will. There's no one better for the job." She intertwines her fingers with theirs, happy for the physical connection, even if the mental one is out of reach. A small sigh escapes her and she finds she desperately wants them to understand.

"Imagine... imagine you landed on a planet where no one could see color. Only black and white and grey. It's always been this way for them and there's nothing wrong with it - they still make beautiful music and delicious food and brilliant novels - Yet they never get why you want them to watch the sunset with you or..." She laughs softly. "Or why you're so good at hide and seek."

"One day you meet someone special and you find you can teach them to see a little bit. Not everything. Maybe they only see the blue of the sky. But it's enough, just to have someone who can share that with you."

Micah listens in the rapt, wide-eyed way they always do when someone has their complete attention -- a little unnerving to some, perhaps, but Deanna has never had a difficult time commanding Micah's attention. They let out a soft little sigh when Deanna laces her fingers together with theirs, and they squeeze her hand gently. They're quiet for a moment after Deanna's done speaking, looking contemplative.

"I can only imagine," they say quietly, and it's true, but Deanna paints a clear picture. Micah understands about as well as any ordinary human could. They shift closer to her on the bed, tilting their head toward her. "It sounds like it must get lonely."
durango: (do you think that's wise?)

[personal profile] durango 2017-06-28 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The intensity of Micah's attention isn't disconcerting at all for Deanna, never has been. In fact it's one of the things she likes so much about them. Not that there is really much she doesn't like.

Now she feels her a blush of her own creeping in and she ducks her head. "Sometimes."

[personal profile] withanh 2017-07-02 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
"But not always." Micah smiles faintly, squeezing her hand again. It's a much needed anchor right now. Micah would prefer not to let go any time soon. "Pardon me if this is too intimate a question by Betazoid standards -- or just your own -- but were you able to forge that sort of connection with your partner back home?"

"Worf," she breathes softly. His name brings with it an intense pang of emotion, a mixture of both loss and guilt. With an attachment so new and uncertain (if not still exciting) as theirs had been it's more than understandable that these months spent away from him have eroded her feelings for him, yet she knows it will probably hurt him, all the same. Then again, who knows what will be waiting for her on the other side of the wormhole when she returns? If. If this works.

She shakes her head. "No, we... had not gotten that far."
withanh: (pic#11298616)

[personal profile] withanh 2017-07-04 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Micah's eyes brighten attentively when she sighs out that name, wondering just how deep that pang of longing goes, but it isn't their place to ask. No, even for a Betan, that seems...a bit intrusive. Still, Micah doesn't make any attempt to untangle their fingers from Deanna's, leaning in closer to rest their head lightly against her shoulder, a gesture of closeness, support. But they don't think hazarding a guess is entirely out of line.

"A new relationship?"
durango: (pensive)

[personal profile] durango 2017-07-05 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
For a moment, Deanna is surprised by their gesture, but then she smiles fondly and leans into Micah. "Yes. Very new. We were still figuring things out."

[personal profile] withanh 2017-07-08 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah." Micah is quiet for a moment, still sniffling quietly, trying not to break the delicate balance of this mood. "That must have been difficult, to have been pulled away so abruptly."
durango: (listening)

[personal profile] durango 2017-07-09 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
"It was." She looks down at their hands joined together and gently rubs her thumb over Micah's. "Is. I still miss him. But... It's not as sharp as before."
withanh: (pic#11298570)

[personal profile] withanh 2017-07-10 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Micah's gaze drops to follow hers and they bite their lip slightly, feeling faintly guilty, even though they know they've done nothing wrong.

"I'm sorry," they say awkwardly, not sure what else to say. It certainly isn't their fault that Deanna's here, but -- what else does one say to a friend?
durango: (listening)

[personal profile] durango 2017-07-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry. An odd trait of English-speakers, she's noticed, to apologize for something they did not do, using it instead as an expression of sympathy. She learned long ago not to demur, but to accept in the spirit that it is offered.

Still, wasn't she supposed to be the one doing the comforting?

"I'll be all right. Things will be different now, with him, I can't pretend they won't be, but... I would not want to forget Barrayar either." Her gaze shifts from their hands back to Micah's face. "I don't want to forget you."
withanh: (pic#11298581)

[personal profile] withanh 2017-07-29 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"I suppose this experience would change anyone," Micah says slowly, as though trying to relieve themself of responsibility. They know, intellectually, that they haven't done anything wrong -- in fact, they haven't done anything at all -- but somehow, they hadn't thought about having a lasting impact on the extrauniversals, not personally, at any rate.

"Not bad different, I hope," they add, but they manage a small smile, still holding onto Deanna's hands. "I don't want to forget you either, Deanna. I -- well, I do wish I could meet him."
durango: (do you think that's wise?)

[personal profile] durango 2017-07-31 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"I wish you could too. I wish you could meet everyone. They'd love you." Then, before she has a chance to stop herself, she says, "I suppose you couldn't come with me?"
withanh: (pic#11298726)

[personal profile] withanh 2017-08-10 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It catches Micah off guard slightly, and they blink for a moment before offering Deanna a slightly faltering half-smile.

"I'm...afraid not." They give Deanna's hands another squeeze, as if in reassurance. "I can't leave Barrayar behind -- or my own world, for that matter. But even if I could bring myself to...it isn't how the Star Gate is designed. I didn't come through that wormhole. The only way we could figure out how to send you back is by neural imprint."
durango: (Default)

omg i'm sorry this is so late sobs

[personal profile] durango 2017-08-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Deanna gives a stiff nod. "Of course." She knew that, she did, even as she said it. "I... just wish we had more time."
withanh: (pic#9831747)

NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR LATE TAGS i owe you an even later one whoops

[personal profile] withanh 2017-08-31 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Micah finds themself having to swallow down a knot in their throat, blinking again. Deanna is certainly moving enough on her own; Micah doesn't think they could withstand this conversation with any composure if she had those empathic powers they've been so curious about. They bite their lip for a moment with a return nod, theirs more of a duck of their head.

"So do I." They manage to crack a smile, if a tentative one, for her benefit. "But on the bright side, you won't have to endure another one of those dreadful parties."
durango: (Default)

[personal profile] durango 2017-09-03 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Deanna responds with a soft huff of a laugh. "That is something." There are many parties just as ridiculous on Betazed but at least no one there is trying to steal her DNA. "In the meantime, we'll just have to make the most of the time we have left."

Then, after a moment's hesitation, she leans in and kisses Micah's forehead.
withanh: (pic#9831796)

[personal profile] withanh 2017-09-07 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Micah's cheeks go slightly pink, and they duck their head again once Deanna pulls back to half-hide a smile. Yes, better lean in favor of the optimism, the silver linings -- God knows there's enough getting them down, both of them prisoners in their own ways.

"And we do still have some time." Micah looks up and full-on smiles at Deanna. "I'm sure we can find some entertainment in our spare hours -- however few. The parties are a drag, but the Cetagandans do have a few right ideas when it comes to food and art. The less esoteric sorts, at least."
durango: (sunshine)

[personal profile] durango 2017-09-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, a smile. Deanna warms at the sight, pleased she could have helped them, in at least this way. Not to mention - they have a very pretty smile. "I do like the poetry. I always have liked seeing the different ways people play with language."
withanh: (pic#11298721)

[personal profile] withanh 2017-09-18 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
The smile doesn't entirely fade, and Micah nods, their eyes soft but bright. "I haven't had much time to peruse their collections, but some of what they study is quite old -- predating even their Empire itself. There are some genres of old Earth poetry the Cetagandans hold in high esteem."
